If you ever plan to pick apples in Julian and then plan to use your beautiful apples for a dutch baby for a nice 'thank you breakfast' for your parents make sure you practice the recipe just once and never use whole wheat flour. Or else you will have a beautiful morning with no food and a total flop in the oven. {true story}

This weekend was so incredibly beautiful and although I have many beach photos I am starting to feel like they look the same every week so for this Monday morning post I thought I would focus on my dutch baby debacle + a new beautiful shop on Cedros, Bixby & Ball. Remember this post... well Melissa opened this store and it is drop-dead-gorgeous. Samantha French prints, John Robshaw linens, flour sack pillows, a Big Chill refrigerator... the list goes on. Well I better get this week going... Lots to do {first item on the list is Henry's costume... more on that later}.

PS. any dutch baby tips?... I am determined to eat a beautiful big fluffy dutch baby this week {wink}

  1. wouldn't dream of doing such an adventurous breakfast; i'd stick to a typical english breakfast or a pain au chocolat...

  3. Oh no! How sad that the Dutch baby flopped! I have two recipes
    I'll send u. One for duty babies and one for muffin tin popovers. They're sort of my favorite. Remember the popovers at Kirby's in Del Mar?

  5. What a small world, I kept meaning to tell you about Bixby & Ball's grand opening this weekend but of course you already knew! I'm so excited for their online shop to open -- that or I'm going to have to make a trip out to CA soon!

  8. Lex,
    Love the Julian apple picking, we have to do that with the girls next October! Here is my mom's dutch baby recipe that we LOVE!
    1/2 cup butter
    5 eggs
    1 1/4 cup flour
    Pre-heat oven to 425. Melt butter in a 4-4.5 quart dish no more than 3 inches deep. Blend eggs, milk and flour in a blender. Pour blender ingredients into melted butter. Bake at 425 for 20-25 minutes. Serve immediately.
    Enjoy, Kristen

  9. I forgot to add 1 1/4 cups milk. Pour that into the blender too. I would not call it a super healthy meal but super yummy! Oh, and then serve with powdered sugar, apples and lemon juice.

  10. You can test more dutch baby recipes on me. I have only had them once and it was at a sleep over in junior high. I don't remember much about them, but I do remember I licked my plate clean.

    I can't wait to hear about H's costume, I am still at a loss for Bronson.

    at least our "picking part" was fun and nap strikes from all 3 boys to top off the day = memorable.

  15. Hi! I'm sure the recipes above are great but I have one from my family if you want it...we've LOVED them for all time. Or, there is a mix from Williams Sonoma that is "no fail!" Also, you MUST must MUST use a black (read: non-enameled) cast iron skillet (I have had my own debacles) and you MUST use the amount of butter prescribed...no scrimping period.
