Checking in... I knew we were at the right spot when we were greeted with Sweet Tea Vodkas {sweet tea flavored vodka, dash of water, ice and a slice of lemon... yum}. From the moment that we parked the car I was loving ever bit of the mid-century modern/ vintage/ industrial design. The Ace Hotel used to be a Howard Johnson Motel connected to a Denny's that is now their restaurant, Kings Highway {see below}.
Scooters to rent & bikes to borrow...
Friday night we took a 5 minute cab ride to the Parker Hotel to have dinner at Mr. Parker's. What an amazing hotel this is, designed by Jonathan Adler it is eccentric, beautiful and anything but simple. I loved it. From the 25 ft tall orange doors at the entrance, to every little light fixture and accessory this place is totally fabulous {and it comes with a fabulous price tag too}. It was out of our price range but was perfect for a special dinner and some bubbly. Oh by the way... speaking of $$ the Ace is so reasonable we got the deluxe room with a private patio and fireplace for $185. To get that rate you need to ask for the "Easy Rider Package" this allows you to have 20% off of everything {all food and drinks, spa treatments, room... everything!}.
Kings Highway. This is the old Denny's that they turned into a great little restaurant. Everything about this place is so well designed. I loved the simplicity of the table setting... love the jar for sugar & jam, the french press coffee {which btw was the most perfect cup of coffee & I don't even drink coffee}, the water jug, the menu, oh and of course the food was just as good as the design. I highly recommend the Ricotta Pancakes with Banana... divine.
There is a photo booth in the lobby, here are our two nights away... The first night just Ross and I on our way to the Parker & the second night {with our new friends, ironically they were away for the first time since their little one was born and it was also their anniversary} on our way to a El Mirasol; not necessarily the best restaurant but they had a great Cadillac margs so it was prefect.
On the last day of our getaway we woke up had our second breakfast at Kings Highway and headed to Joshua Tree. It was 80 degrees and so beautiful. We only stopped for a little over an hour. Long enough for Ross to cut up his hands on the rocks and for me to finish a painting... the perfect ending to a perfect weekend with my husband.
The pool. We had the best time at the pool on Saturday. We had 'adult' shaved ice {watermelon, strawberry or blackberry all made fresh the night before}, an amazing lunch served on black and white enamel wear, listened to everything from Johny Cash to Peter Tosh, made some new friends, and before we knew it was time for dinner.
