Ross and I talk about cars a lot. Not fancy cars, more like cars that work for our family. Our conversations are always concluded with the agreement that our perfect car does not exist. A perfect car for us would be safe, fit in our garage, good for camping, a hybrid or electric or diesel, have good design, and be low maintenance. Recently we added a new requirement: it should be a good place for Ross to work when he works at home. The thought of a Westfalia has always been in the rotation of our car analysis but since our first test drive last weekend we are totally consumed by the idea. Many snacks were eaten by H as we drove him and his brother all over San Diego county {150 miles worth} looking for the perfect Westfalia. Our most notable destination this weekend was in Alpine where Henry uncovered a Gravedigger Monster Truck that he could drive. After our recent trip to the Monster Truck Rally he has been obsessed. I almost thought it was a good idea to buy this van on the spot for the simple fact that the seller wanted to give H Gravedigger and it wouldn't fit in the Prius {it's a sign!}. See I am a bit of an impulse buyer. Not good when buying a 30 year-old used car. We didn't buy one this weekend but we have some potentials that we are excited about. Not fuel efficient, might not fit in the garage, NOT low maintenance, but the fun that could be had is endless. Thoughts of reupholstering with blankets {Pendleton or Mexican, can't decide}, having a mobile "beach house", and sleeping in the van together {I can't think of anything better} is 100% PURE HAPPINESS for me.
Super Bowl Sunday was spent at the beach. Although a beer and some good commercial watching would have been fun too, the weather was begging for us to come play.

  2. my dream car is a vw bus truck, four door. i would have it painted robins egg blue, upholster the seats in oil cloth, and it would would have pink gingham curtains. someday i'm getting one, fo sho. there's that whole reliability thing my hubs has a problem with though. him and his brother had a vw bus when growing up and spent so much time behind it pushing it, he still has the license plate memorized!

  6. I kinda have my dream car right now -- at least, it's the right now dream. I'm sure it'll change someday.

And Super Bowl Sunday at the beach in San Diego? Sounds good to me. I miss Torrey Pines. I should have gone there more.

  8. we had an old vw bus when i was a kid. my last memory of it is maybe one of my favorites: climbing into it the day my brother was born...it was dawn, the windows were all wet with morning dew and the car never quite warmed up during the short drive to my cousins house where my sister and i would spend the next few days. the car actually died on the fwy while my father was on his way to pick up my mother and new baby brother from the hospital and bring them home (not such a great memory for my dad!). bye bye vw - hello baby boy!

  9. My sister and I grew up with that same van! It was THE best car. I can remember many an afternoon changing for swimming lessons, going to the beach, carpools - so much fun! Sadly, my Mom had to get rid of it before either of us turned 16.

  13. Is that a Westy I see?! We have a '91 Vanagon and we LOVE it!!! It was an awesome find. When MR. and I met back in '91 he originally had a VW Bus and when he drove up to pick me up on a date, I was taken back. I thought, "hmmm... maybe I should offer to drive". I miss that ol' bus, but now having our second one, it's like old times. Only this time, the girls get to enjoy it as well. Sophie's friends call it the "epic van" and always asks for a ride. I hope you guys find one... they're awesome!!!
